Food poverty is on the rise in Ireland, with over 600,000 people being affected in 2013 because of the inability to afford or access healthy food. One in five children in Ireland go to school hungry. 28% of teachers have reported that children who come to school without having had breakfast do not function properly and lack concentration.   With a budget of almost €40 million, supported by the department of social protection, the school meals programme supports 200,000 children in DEIS schools.
